MED-MAR-LAB · Mediterranean Maritime Living Lab

A living lab for sustainable nautical tourism

Mundo Marino connects real Mediterranean operations with research, education and innovation. Blue Carbon and Blue Impact are two complementary lines within MED-MAR-LAB: one platform for testing ideas and building evidence.

MED-MAR-LAB · Two complementary lines

One operational platform. Two lines of work.

MED-MAR-LAB, Mundo Marino’s Mediterranean Maritime Living Lab, connects vessels, routes and operational experience with scientific, educational and technology partners. Blue Carbon and Blue Impact sit within this same platform.

Blue Carbon

Climate and marine ecosystems: connecting knowledge, blue carbon conservation and learning about the footprint of nautical activities.

Line 01 · Blue Carbon

Connecting climate and marine ecosystems

Blue Carbon keeps the focus on blue carbon and its relationship with coastal and marine ecosystem conservation. MED-MAR-LAB provides the operational setting to explore observation, awareness and scientific collaboration, with the scope and methodology agreed for each pilot.

Propose a collaboration
  • Knowledge and awareness of blue carbon ecosystems, including seagrass meadows.
  • Scientific collaboration to define what to observe, how to measure it and the limits of the evidence.
  • A connection with operational footprint reduction, while distinguishing activity emissions from carbon stored in ecosystems.

This line does not establish carbon removal, completed restoration or certified carbon credits. Outcomes must be supported by specific evidence.

Line 02 · Blue Impact

Turning daily operations into measurable impact

Blue Impact is Mundo Marino’s impact framework for sustainable nautical tourism. It brings together five areas of work and uses MED-MAR-LAB as a platform to co-design, test, evaluate and share practices with other Mediterranean destinations.

Lower operational footprint

Advance energy efficiency and reduce the operational footprint. Set baselines and measure consumption and emissions intensity using an explicit methodology.

Ocean literacy · Aula Abierta al Mar

Bring knowledge of the Mediterranean into the onboard experience through Aula Abierta al Mar. Co-design content with educational and scientific organisations and assess learning among actual participants.

Local value

Support employment, suppliers and collaboration with coastal communities. Document the local contribution and context of each activity.

Impact measurement

Distinguish activity, participation and outcomes. Record each pilot’s scope, method, period, costs and limitations before communicating its impact.

Mediterranean replication

Turn evaluated practices into materials and protocols that ports, destinations and operators can adapt to their local conditions.

From ambition to evidence

Each pilot should agree an objective, baseline, participants, indicators and evaluation criteria. Passenger and mileage volumes show operational scale; educational, environmental and local outcomes will be measured separately.

Blue Carbon provides a specific line of work on climate and ecosystems. Blue Impact connects that line with marine education, local value, evaluation and replication. MED-MAR-LAB provides the real-world setting for both.

What we can support

Six capabilities for real-world pilots

A practical operating context for real-world technology demonstration and validation.

Piloting aboard operating vessels

Real-world piloting aboard passenger vessels in operation.

Coastal and port testing

Testing in coastal and port environments in the Spanish Mediterranean.

Crews and passengers

Pilots involving professional crews and passengers.

Data collection

Operational and environmental data collection as part of pilot activity.

Citizen engagement

Citizen engagement within suitable demonstration activity.

Validation and uptake

Validation and support for market uptake.

Mediterranean Maritime Living Lab

Pilots shaped by real operating conditions

The proposed environment brings together operating passenger vessels, professional crews, passengers and coastal and port scenarios. This combination can support pilots in real conditions, from trial activity and data collection through validation and support for market uptake.

The scope presented is operational: it does not claim a dedicated test facility or technical infrastructure beyond the confirmed environment.

Who we want to connect with

Collaborate on a real-world pilot

We welcome scientific, educational, technology and local partners for Blue Carbon and Blue Impact pilots, as well as teams preparing European projects. Each collaboration needs an agreed scope, responsibilities and evaluation method.

The collaboration context

A real-world contribution to a European testing network

This Horizon Europe topic provides a reference for exploring a European network of ocean technology testing sites. Mundo Marino proposes a potential contribution from operating passenger vessels and Mediterranean coastal routes. This does not imply confirmed consortium participation or that the call is currently open.
